# Does losing muscle slow your metabolism?

The metabolic argument runs both ways; ProForta helps you maintain muscle while you lose the weight, measured over twelve weeks, and the [60-second self-check](https://proforta.com/check?utm_source=proforta&utm_campaign=learn-does-losing-muscle-slow-your-metabolism) gives you a first number.

About three minutes to read

Partly, and the split has actually been measured. In a study of resting metabolic rate following weight loss, about 60 percent of the reduction was explained by the loss of energy-expending tissue, and about 40 percent by metabolic adaptation that happens independently of what you weigh.

People search for this under semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound). The body-composition answer below is the same whichever one you are on, and it is the same again if you are losing weight without any of them.

## Two different things wearing the same name

When people say weight loss wrecks your metabolism, they are usually running two separate effects together.

The first is arithmetic. A smaller body with less muscle in it burns less energy at rest, because muscle is metabolically expensive tissue and there is less of it. That is the roughly 60 percent, and it is the part that responds to what you do.

The second is adaptation: the body becoming more efficient at a given size, which happens whether or not you keep your muscle. That is the roughly 40 percent, and no amount of protein or lifting removes it.

Both together are why maintaining a lower weight takes more attention than reaching it did. Neither of them makes weight loss futile, which is a conclusion the internet reaches far too quickly.

## Why this decides the shape of regain

Follow-up data from the STEP 1 trial extension found that a year after withdrawal, participants had regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost. What comes back is not a mirror image of what left. Fat is rebuilt readily when intake rises. Lean tissue is not, because eating more does not by itself tell the body to build muscle.

So a window that cost you lean mass leaves you at a similar weight with a different composition and a lower resting expenditure than you started with. That is the real cost hiding inside a number that looked like pure progress, and it is the reason the split matters more than the total.

## The half you can act on

The 2025 joint advisory names the two levers plainly: enough protein, with 1.5 grams per kilogram of fat-free mass a day as its more accurate target or 80 to 120 grams a day without a scan, alongside strength training at least three times a week and at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity. Neither of those touches the adaptation component. Both of them act directly on the tissue component, which is the larger share.

## What you can check this week

- **Work out your protein target and count one ordinary day against it.** The [60-second self-check](https://proforta.com/check?utm_source=proforta&utm_campaign=learn-does-losing-muscle-slow-your-metabolism) shows the advisory's target in grams and runs entirely in your browser.

- **Put resistance sessions in the calendar as appointments.** This is the lever that acts on the tissue side, and it is the one most likely to be skipped in a week that gets busy.

- **Record three benchmark lifts.** Your strength log is the closest thing you have to a running read on the muscle you are keeping.

- **Stop reading a single weigh-in as information.** Weekly averages, over months, are the only version of the scale that says anything about direction.

## Where ProForta comes in

ProForta exists because these signals are scattered across apps and nobody is watching them together. It reads your weight trend, your resistance sessions, your protein and your recovery on a private node that belongs to you, turns them into one score with a plain explanation of why, and tells you the single change worth making this week. Raw values never leave the node. LifeCare.ID® carries the identity and the consent record.

ProForta is a wellness tool, not medical advice. Nothing here speaks to your medicine or your care. Your prescriber stays the decision-maker on both.

## Watch it instead of guessing

The ProForta Challenge is twelve weeks with your muscle actually watched while you work on the weight, however you are going about it. It is free, it is a small beta on one private node, and the only person you are ever compared with is you at the start of it.

The self-check runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. If you would rather look around first, [open the demo](https://proforta.com/demo), nothing to install and no account to create.

Corrected 8 October 2026: an earlier version of this page attributed a protein minimum of 1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight and a range of 1.6 to 2.2 to the 2025 joint advisory. The advisory does not give those figures; the figures above are its own.
