# How do you get enough protein when you have no appetite?

Appetite drops, the protein target does not; ProForta helps you maintain muscle while you lose the weight, and the [60-second self-check](https://proforta.com/check?utm_source=proforta&utm_campaign=learn-protein-when-you-have-no-appetite) gives you the number.

About three minutes to read

Your protein target does not move because your appetite did. What changes is delivery. Three things do most of the work: eat the protein first, spread it across the day instead of stacking it, and let some of it arrive as liquid.

People search for this under semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound). The body-composition answer below is the same whichever one you are on, and it is the same again if you are losing weight without any of them.

## Why this is hard, specifically

These medicines work by suppressing appetite and slowing the stomach. You feel full after a few bites, a large plate is faintly unappealing, and volume becomes the enemy. A 2025 cross-sectional study of 69 GLP-1 users measured what that does in practice: protein intake averaging about 77 grams a day, just under the low end of the 2025 joint advisory's 80 to 120 gram target, with only 43 percent reaching 1.2 grams per kilogram of adjusted body weight.

So the failure is not that people do not know protein matters. Nearly everyone has been told. The failure is that the advice stops at the target and never addresses the fact that the target has to fit through a much smaller opening than it used to.

## The three changes that fit through the opening

- **Protein first, every meal.** Before the carbohydrate, before the vegetables, before anything else. On a suppressed appetite, whatever you eat first is often all you eat, so meal order alone can move your daily total by 20 or 30 grams without you eating one extra bite.

- **Spread it, do not stack it.** Several moderate servings across the day beat one large serving at dinner, both for what your body does with it and for what your stomach will accept. Roughly 25 to 30 grams at a time is a reasonable unit.

- **Use low-volume sources.** A whey serving delivers 25 to 30 grams in a small, fast-clearing form that a slowed stomach usually tolerates when solid food will not. Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, eggs and tinned fish are the solid-food equivalents: high protein per bite, low bulk.

## What you can check this week

- **Measure the gap before you fix it.** Count one ordinary day, subtract it from your target, and look at the number. Without a scan, the advisory's target is 80 to 120 grams a day; with one, it is 1.5 grams per kilogram of fat-free mass. Most gaps turn out to be one or two servings wide, not a whole diet rebuild. The [self-check](https://proforta.com/check?utm_source=proforta&utm_campaign=learn-protein-when-you-have-no-appetite) works out the gap in your browser.

- **Change the order at one meal a day.** Only one. Whichever meal you most reliably eat. Protein first, everything else after.

- **Put one liquid option where you will see it.** The fridge, not the back of a cupboard. The point is that it is available on the evening when nothing else is.

- **Write down what you actually managed.** Two weeks of honest counting tells you far more than a perfect week does, because it shows you which days fail and why.

## The limit worth naming

The advisory also sets a lower bound: protein should not fall below 0.4 to 0.5 grams per kilogram a day. If you are consistently unable to reach even that, if you cannot keep food down, or if you have a kidney condition that changes what is safe for you, that belongs with your prescriber rather than with a web page. This page is about the ordinary case, which is a target that is reachable once you stop trying to reach it in one sitting.

## Where ProForta comes in

ProForta reads what you log against your own target and tells you the single adjustment worth making this week. Close the protein gap, add the training session, or leave things alone because they are working. Your data is read on a private node that belongs to you, and the app sees interpreted results only. LifeCare.ID® carries the identity and the consent record.

ProForta is a wellness tool, not medical advice. Nothing here speaks to your medicine or your care. Your prescriber stays the decision-maker on both.

## Watch it instead of guessing

The ProForta Challenge is twelve weeks with your muscle actually watched while you work on the weight, however you are going about it. It is free, it is a small beta on one private node, and the only person you are ever compared with is you at the start of it.

Corrected 8 October 2026: an earlier version of this page called 1.2 grams per kilogram a minimum, which the 2025 joint advisory does not, and gave the 2025 study's average intake as about 54 grams a day against 62 in non-users. The study reports about 77 grams and has no non-user group.
