Losing weight after fifty: how much muscle is at stake?
Age raises the stakes; ProForta helps you maintain muscle while you lose the weight, measured over twelve weeks, and the 60-second self-check shows the advisory's daily protein target in grams.
The share of weight lost as lean tissue does not look obviously different after fifty. What is different is what you have to spare, and how quickly age is already taking some of it. That is the whole of the answer, and it argues for more attention rather than for less weight loss.
People search for this under semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound). The body-composition answer below is the same whichever one you are on, and it is the same again if you are losing weight without any of them.
The background rate you are already paying
A quantitative review of ageing skeletal muscle puts the ordinary rate of loss at a median of about 0.47 percent a year in men and 0.37 percent in women. By 75, the longitudinal figures rise to 0.80 to 0.98 percent a year in men and 0.64 to 0.70 percent in women.
Set that beside the trial body-composition numbers. The SURMOUNT-1 substudy reported roughly a quarter of the weight lost as lean mass. A twelve-week window that costs you a couple of percent of your lean mass has, in that arithmetic, moved you forward several years. That is not an argument against losing weight, which carries its own large benefits. It is an argument for making the two levers that protect muscle non-negotiable rather than optional.
What changes about the advice, and what does not
The targets themselves do not change. The 2025 joint advisory gives no separate protein figure for older adults. It treats 1.5 grams per kilogram of fat-free mass a day as the more accurate target, or 80 to 120 grams a day without a scan, and it names older age among the things that raise the risk of muscle loss when protein intake is low. Its exercise recommendation is strength training at least three times a week plus at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity.
What changes is the cost of missing them, and the value of measuring function rather than only mass. Muscle size and muscle strength do not decline at the same rate with age, and it is the strength and the function that decide whether you can carry a suitcase upstairs or get up off the floor. So a number that tracks what you can do is worth as much as a number that tracks what you weigh.
What you can check this week
- Count chair stands. Thirty seconds, no hands, count the repetitions. Write the number and the date. Repeat monthly. It is the single most informative free measurement available after fifty, and it moves before anything else does.
- Set three lift benchmarks. One press, one pull, one lower body, recorded. Strength holding while weight falls is the outcome you are actually after.
- Do the protein arithmetic on lean mass, not body weight. If a scan has given you your fat-free mass, multiply it by 1.5. If not, the 60-second self-check shows the advisory's 80 to 120 grams a day. Then count one ordinary day against it.
- Book the resistance sessions before the week fills. Three is the recommendation. Two that happen beat three that do not.
- Get a baseline body-composition scan if you are near the start. The value of a week-zero reading is highest for the people with the least lean mass to spare. The baseline page covers what to ask for.
The conversation worth having
If you have a kidney condition, take medicines that interact with protein intake, or have been told you are frail, the numbers on this page are a starting point for a conversation with your prescriber rather than a plan to follow unedited. Nothing here speaks to your care.
Where ProForta comes in
ProForta watches the weight trend, the resistance sessions, the protein and the recovery together, on a private node that belongs to you, and gives you one continuous read on whether the muscle is holding. Raw values never leave your node and are never displayed. LifeCare.ID® carries the identity and the consent record, revocable in one tap.
ProForta is a wellness tool, not medical advice. Nothing here speaks to your medicine or your care. Your prescriber stays the decision-maker on both.
Watch it instead of guessing
The ProForta Challenge is twelve weeks with your muscle actually watched while you work on the weight, however you are going about it. It is free, it is a small beta on one private node, and the only person you are ever compared with is you at the start of it.
The self-check runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. If you would rather look around first, open the demo, nothing to install and no account to create.

Corrected 8 October 2026: an earlier version of this page attributed a minimum of 1.2 grams per kilogram, a range of 1.6 to 2.2, and an older-adult target of 1.6 to 2.3 grams per kilogram of fat-free mass to the 2025 joint advisory. The advisory gives none of those figures; the figures above are its own.
